Semesters

Use the semester GPA and counted credits from your applicable regulation. Do not take a simple average of semester GPAs unless every semester has the same counted credits.

CGPA formula

CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × counted semester credits) ÷ Σ(counted credits). This is equivalent to computing all counted course credit points together. A simple average of semester GPAs is correct only when every semester has the same counted credits.

For R2021 affiliated B.E./B.Tech., the regulation explicitly excludes U grades and bases n on successfully cleared courses. R2025 also defines CGPA through the credit-weighted course model and computes it to two decimal places. Additional-course treatment can differ for Honours/Minor requirements, so use the credits counted by your applicable regulation.

Regulation scope

For affiliated non-autonomous B.E./B.Tech. cohorts under R2025 or R2021. University Departments, autonomous colleges and other Anna University regulation families need their own academic record rules.

CGPA formula

CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Counted semester credits) ÷ Σ(Counted semester credits).

The same result comes from one course-level credit-weighted calculation. Keep excluded status grades and non-credit courses out of both totals.

What is counted

  • The official GPA for each semester and the credits that produced that GPA.
  • Only courses and credits that the applicable regulation allows in the cumulative result.

What is excluded

  • U, SA, WC under R2025.
  • U or RA, SA, WD or W under R2021, and any non-credit or excluded additional course shown separately on the record.

Worked example

A semester GPA of 8.20 over 20 credits contributes 164 points. A GPA of 7.60 over 24 credits contributes 182.40. CGPA = 346.40 ÷ 44 = 7.87.

Common mistakes

  • Taking a plain average of semester GPAs when the semester credits differ.
  • Adding a status grade or an excluded course to the cumulative credit total.
