Frequently asked questions

How does this VIT CGPA calculator work?

It applies Σ(Credits × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credits) exactly as published in FFCS Academic Regulations Version 5.0 (Sections 2, 9.4 and 9.10). VIT Vellore and Chennai, 2025 to 2026 admission onward. Other VIT campuses can publish separate rules.

Will this match the CGPA on my official VIT transcript?

It should, as long as you enter every counted course with the same credits and letter grade shown on your official grade sheet. This calculator was last checked against VIT Academic Regulations Version 5.0 on 2026-09-12 by GradeCalculator.in editorial team. If VIT has since revised the regulation, the official grade sheet takes precedence.

How do I convert my VIT CGPA to a percentage?

VIT's published conversion is percentage = CGPA × 10. Use the CGPA to percentage calculator to apply it automatically.

Regulation scope

For VIT Vellore and VIT Chennai FFCS students, Version 4.0 covers 2021–22 through 2024–25 admissions and Version 5.0 covers 2025–26 onward. VIT-AP and VIT Bhopal are separate universities with their own regulations.

VIT CGPA formula

CGPA = Σ(Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credits). VIT reports the result rounded upward to two decimal places.

A failed course remains in the calculation. A substituted failed course is represented once, not once for every attempt.

What is counted

  • Credit-bearing programme courses registered after the add, drop and withdrawal rules settle.
  • F and N courses with zero grade points, unless the regulation specifically excludes the course category.

What is excluded

  • P, U and W courses.
  • Audit courses, Minor and Honours courses under Version 4.0, and Second Major courses under Version 5.0.

Worked example

A GPA of 8.10 over 24 credits contributes 194.40 points. A GPA of 8.70 over 20 credits contributes 174.00. CGPA = 368.40 ÷ 44 = 8.3727, reported upward as 8.38.

Common mistakes

  • Taking a plain average of semester GPAs.
  • Treating W, audit, Minor, Honours or Second Major credits as zero-point courses instead of excluding them.
