Current VIT assessment pattern
For a theory course, VIT Academic Regulations 5.0 uses CAT-I 15, CAT-II 15, internal assessment 30, and FAT 40. The 30-mark internal part may be 3×10, 2×15, or 1×30 and can use quizzes, course projects, design projects, case studies, or seminars.
Lab and embedded courses
Lab-only courses use 60% continuous assessment and 40% FAT. For embedded theory + lab courses, VIT combines theory and lab using the credit ratio (L+T):(P/2). The calculator defaults to 3:1 and lets you change it.
Different assessment structure?
Rename, add, remove, or change the maximum marks and weight of any component. Use the structure communicated by your course faculty when it differs from the default preset.

Can I change the assessment components and weights?
Yes. The default preset follows FFCS Academic Regulations Version 5.0, but every component's label, maximum marks, and weight can be edited to match what your course faculty communicated, since internal assessment structure can vary by course and department.

Regulation scope
The preset follows VIT Vellore and Chennai FFCS Version 4.0 and Version 5.0 assessment rules. VIT-AP and VIT Bhopal can use different components, so edit the rows to match the course handout.
Weighted marks formula
Weighted total = Σ((Marks earned ÷ Maximum marks) × Component weight).
The standard theory preset is CAT-I 15%, CAT-II 15%, digital assignments 30% and FAT 40%. Lab and embedded courses use different structures.
What is counted
- Only the assessment components and maximum marks shown for the selected VIT course type.
- The component weights stated in the applicable regulation or course handout.
What is excluded
- Components that are not part of the chosen course scheme.
- A calculated weighted total presented as an official final grade before VIT’s grading and normalization process.
Worked example
For CAT-I 38/50, CAT-II 41/50, internal 24/30 and FAT 72/100, the weighted total is 11.40 + 12.30 + 24.00 + 28.80 = 76.50.
Common mistakes
- Entering CAT marks as if they were already out of 15 instead of out of 50.
- Using the theory preset for a lab or embedded course, or treating the total as the official letter grade.
