What counts
F and N count as 0. P, U, and W have no grade point. Raw marks do not always predict the letter grade because VIT uses relative and absolute grading.

Do failing or incomplete grades count in the CGPA?
Grades with a defined point value of 0 are counted and pull the average down. Grades with no defined point value at all — see the exclusions listed above — are left out of the calculation entirely rather than treated as zero.

Regulation scope
For VIT Vellore and VIT Chennai FFCS Version 4.0 and Version 5.0. VIT-AP and VIT Bhopal publish separate university regulations, and theory grade boundaries can be relative.
How the grade is used
The awarded grade supplies the grade point used in GPA and CGPA: Σ(Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credits).
S through E are performance grades. F and N carry zero points. P, U and W do not enter the programme GPA calculation.
What is counted
- The official letter grade and its course credits.
- F or N once when the course remains in the programme GPA calculation.
What is excluded
- P pass/fail, U audit and W withdrawn courses.
- Audit, Minor, Honours and Version 5.0 Second Major courses.
Worked example
A 3-credit A, a 4-credit B and a 2-credit F give 27 + 32 + 0 = 59 points over 9 counted credits. The GPA is 6.56 after VIT upward rounding.
Common mistakes
- Assuming one fixed marks band for every VIT theory class.
- Treating N or F as an omitted course instead of a zero-point course.
