Frequently asked questions

How does this VIT GPA calculator work?

It applies Σ(Credits × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credits) exactly as published in FFCS Academic Regulations Version 5.0 (Sections 2, 9.4 and 9.10). VIT Vellore and Chennai, 2025 to 2026 admission onward. Other VIT campuses can publish separate rules.

Will this match the GPA on my official VIT transcript?

It should, as long as you enter every counted course with the same credits and letter grade shown on your official grade sheet. This calculator was last checked against VIT Academic Regulations Version 5.0 on 2026-09-12 by GradeCalculator.in editorial team. If VIT has since revised the regulation, the official grade sheet takes precedence.

How do I convert my VIT CGPA to a percentage?

VIT's published conversion is percentage = CGPA × 10. Use the CGPA to percentage calculator to apply it automatically.

Regulation scope

VIT calls this semester result GPA, although students often call it SGPA. The cited Version 4.0 and Version 5.0 rules apply to Vellore and Chennai. Other VIT group universities have separate rules.

Semester GPA formula

GPA = Σ(Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credits), rounded upward to two decimal places.

The grade point comes from the official letter grade. Large theory classes can use relative grading, so raw marks do not always map to a fixed letter band.

What is counted

  • All credit-bearing courses included in the semester result.
  • F and N at zero points, when they are part of the programme GPA calculation.

What is excluded

  • P, U and W courses.
  • Audit, Minor, Honours and, under Version 5.0, Second Major courses.

Worked example

A 4-credit A gives 36 points, a 3-credit C gives 21, and a 2-credit F gives 0. GPA = 57 ÷ 9 = 6.3333, reported upward as 6.34.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping F from the denominator. VIT includes the failed course with zero points.
  • Using marks alone to infer a VIT letter grade in a relative-grading theory class.
