Important exclusions
DX credits are not included in CGPA. Audit and non-credit courses do not contribute grade points. Minimum passing grade is P = 4.

What is the highest grade point at VTU?
O carries 10 grade points (Outstanding · 90–100), the maximum on VTU's published scale in B.E./B.Tech Regulations 2022.
Do failing or incomplete grades count in the CGPA?
Grades with a defined point value of 0 are counted and pull the average down. Grades with no defined point value at all — see the exclusions listed above — are left out of the calculation entirely rather than treated as zero.

Regulation scope
For the VTU B.E./B.Tech. 2022 scheme. Confirm the regulation for students admitted under the newer VTU 2025 scheme or another programme.
Grade point use
The selected grade point feeds SGPA and CGPA through Σ(Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credits).
VTU uses absolute marks bands in the cited 2022 table. P = 4 is the minimum passing grade.
What is counted
- The official letter grade and credit for each course.
- F at zero points only when it appears as a counted credit course in the official result.
What is excluded
- DX, AU, PP, NP, IC and W entries with no counted credits.
- A grade table from a different VTU scheme.
Worked example
A total of 73 falls in the A band and gives 8 grade points. In a GPA example, 4-credit A, 3-credit B+ and 2-credit P give 61 ÷ 9 = 6.78.
Common mistakes
- Using the newer 2025 scheme without checking the admission year.
- Treating DX as the same as F. DX has no counted credits, while F is a zero-point fail grade.
