Credit-weighted target planning

The calculator solves VTU's credit-weighted CGPA equation for the next semester.

Formula basis: VTU Regulations 2022, clause 6.6.

Frequently asked questions

How is the required next-semester SGPA calculated?

The planner solves Σ(Credits × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credits) for the missing term: it takes your current CGPA and completed credits, your target CGPA, and your next semester's credits, then works out the SGPA you need this term to reach that target.

What if the required SGPA is above 10?

That means the target is mathematically out of reach in one semester on the credits you entered — no achievable SGPA under VTU's scale reaches it. Spread the target over more semesters or lower it.

Does this planner account for VTU's rounding rule?

Yes. The required SGPA is rounded to the nearest value, matching how the credit-weighted formula from B.E./B.Tech Regulations 2022 behaves.

Regulation scope

This planner uses the VTU 2022 credit-weighted CGPA rule. It is for applicable B.E./B.Tech. cohorts from 2022–23, not an assumption that the same formula covers the newer 2025 scheme.

Required next SGPA

Required SGPA = [Target CGPA × (Completed credits + Next credits) − Current CGPA × Completed credits] ÷ Next credits.

The result is rounded to two decimals for planning. Keep DX, audit and non-credit entries out of the credit fields.

What is counted

  • Current CGPA and completed counted credits from the 2022 scheme record.
  • Next semester credits that VTU will include in CGPA.

What is excluded

  • DX, AU, PP, NP, IC and W credits.
  • Credits governed by a different VTU scheme or programme regulation.

Worked example

With current CGPA 7.60 over 60 credits, target 7.90 after 20 counted credits needs (7.90 × 80 − 7.60 × 60) ÷ 20 = 8.80 SGPA.

Common mistakes

  • Entering total registered credits rather than counted credits.
  • Treating a requirement above 10 as a valid SGPA target.

VTU campus and grading coverage

The calculators implement the cited VTU B.E./B.Tech 2022 scheme across applicable constituent and affiliated colleges. Students in another programme or an older scheme should use that regulation instead of assuming a campus-specific rule.
